Veseyans Colts travelled to Sunnybank Avenue for their first league game of the season against opponents Aston Old Eds. With a strong breeze on their back the visitors quickly took a 14 point lead within the first 10 minutes with tries from Issac Wadle and Preston Pritchard. Veseyans continued to pile on the pressure with excellent work from the forwards in both the set piece and the loose coupled with the backs looking to play a wide and expansive game. Further tries from Elliot Dean, Max Hewkin and Juala Reehal saw the visitors take a commanding 0-33 lead with half an hour on the clock. As the half entered its final seconds excellent interchange play finally resulted with Ben Sale scoring in the corner and a 0-38 lead going into the break.
Just as in the first half Veseyans despite playing into a strong breeze and ringing the changes quickly scored tries through Harry Prescott and again Preston Pritchard to take the score to 0-50 and end the game in accordance with the league rules. The game did continue and different combinations and styles were tried as the team prepares for its next league encounter.Â
In the spirit of rugby a big thank you to all the Veseyans players who supported Aston due to numbers and injury which helped make the game happen. There were several outstanding performances and everyone contributed which was really pleasing but in particular Elliot Dean for his tireless work in the second row, Archie Strachen for how he controlled the game for both teams and his outstanding goal kicking but for his 2 tries, set piece work and energy all over the park the MOM goes to Preston Pritchard.Â
With a development game next week the team will prepare for Birmingham Solihull the following week back in the league with a real sense of optimism for the season.
