A young Veseyans Colts side put in a great performance against a very experience and committed Burntwood side. Earlier in the season Burntwood put the V’s through the ringer and executed a very heavy defeat over this young side.

On Thursday night this Veseyans side showed how far they have come this season and more importantly have shown what a bright future the club has in the hands of these young players.

Veseyans started extremely well and took the game to the opposition with strong running by Courtney Cummins, Jack Ward and Conor Woakes. The contact area proved to be very physical and the likes of Guy Merrington supported by Tom Thornberry, Tom Smith, Ben Tatlow and Rob Lesley never took a step back.

Veseyans set piece both at scrum and line out produced good ball which was well distributed by Ollie Turley and Jon Fellows. Direct running by centres Jack Ward and Jordan Reader kept the Burntwood defence on their toes.

Following a number of penalties awarded to V’s they chose to kick to the corner and from another penalty a quick tap produced the opening score for an unconverted try by Jack Ward.

Burntwood kicked deep into the V’s half and the back three of Harry Hayes, Elliott Newel and Alex Williams coped well under pressure from a good line chase.

Veseyans went on to dominate the first half but were unable to add to the score line.

The 2nd half saw a very different Burntwood approach with some very direct offensive and defensive work. The V’s stood strong and competed well. However a number of penalties against the V’s put them deep into their own half. Burntwood produced their first score from a 5mt quick tap putting their centre over for a converted try.

Moving into the last 10mins V’s attempted to clear their line only for the kick to be charged down in the dead ball area which again produced a converted try for Burntwood.

V’s responded well and reduced the deficit in the last few minutes with a well taken unconverted try by Calvin Clements.
