Veseyans U9’s fielded two balanced sides for the Sutton RFC Mini Rugby Festival on 2nd April and faced some tough opposition from well drilled sides from Bourneville, Sils, Moseley and Sutton.

Both teams put in maximum effort in all of their matches, with the wide pitches allowing some good passages of open play and powerful attacking runs from the likes of Daniel Brook, Luke Byrne, Archie Strachan, George Mutch and Oliver Taroni.

Veseyans demonstrated how their positional awareness and spacing has improved over the season and they passed the ball around well, both in open play as well as off-loading effectively in the tackle when appropriate.

Once again the V’s put in some outstanding defensive work, both individually and as a team. It was great to see everyone getting stuck into the tackles, with notable efforts from Deacon Brookes, Conor Cassidy, Ellis Bessey and Alex Hume, as well as the usual suspects.

Out of the 10 games played in total, there were close wins and losses for both U9’s teams, as well as a draw, however by the final game, a combination of the heat, close to an hour of rugby and the wide pitches, had started to take its toll, and a very strong Moseley side proved to be a particularly tough final encounter.

That said, there were plenty of great individual and team tries scored by both U9’s teams, with a storming solo effort from Matthew Boland into the corner, a highlight.
Other try scorers were George Mutch (4), Daniel Brook (3), Luke Byrne (3), Oliver Taroni (1), Charlie Francis (1), William Bowen (1), Aiden Millard (1), William Eustace-Street (1) and Archie Strachan top scoring with 7.

The V’s were once again very well supported by parents and families and a great day of rugby was enjoyed by all in the sunshine.
