The under 8’s made the trip to Market Harborough for a Mini Rugby Festival on 19th March and despite the distance eight players and a dedicated bunch of supporters arrived on a windswept morning fashionably late for the first of our four matches.
First up were the home side Market Harborough who were well drilled. Despite that V’s opened the scoring with James scoring the first try supported by Paola. MH struck back and played some great passing rugby resulting in two great tries before V’s answered with David and Harry both scoring in quick succession. MH seemed to find a second wind and scored another two tries before James ran in two great tries from solo runs, one from the far end of the pitch after a dropped ball by MH. Final score 5 – 5.
After a short break it was Sutton, Ollie with some great support from Billy made his first mark of the day, David assisted by Toby quickly followed with another great try but Sutton answered and with some powerful running their third try unsettled the V’s. Half time gave the V’s time to reset and they came out fighting, Ollie with some excellent dummies made a path through to score and James made another great run but despite some fearsome tagging from Ella Sutton took advantage when a ball in touch from some strong play resulted in a free pass to overtake the V’s. Final score Sutton 6 Veseyans 5.
Next came Rushden, an organised team who were a great team to play, in a really spirited game of end to end rugby with some committed tackling from Paola, V’s scored 3 tries David, Ollie and James crossing the line with some great support from Ella, Toby and Billy to get them there it was a great game to watch. Final score Rushden 5- Veseyans 3.
As the wind picked up our final game was against Coleville and it was Harry from his perch on the wing that opened the scoring, by this stage there were tags blowing across the pitch as the wind tagged players despite this both team battled on with some great passing from Paola resulting in a great try in the corner from Ollie. The commitment in defence continued with Ella and Billy tackling very effectively while the attack continued to produce another 4 tries. Final score Coleville 5 Veseyans 6.
Veseyans under 8’s showed real team spirit with everyone working very hard in defence and attack to produce some great rugby. Well done everyone.
