Veseyans were looking to continue their winning form with a potentially tricky league fixture away at Yardley and District. The game started at a frantic pace leading to some scrappy play and a couple of untidy set pieces. However, Veseyans managed to quickly ship the ball wide allowing captain Tony Hayes to wind back the years and superbly score two tries in quick succession.
Yardley responded swiftly with two break away tries of their own, finished brilliantly by their young winger. With the home side now 2 points ahead, Veseyans won a penalty just outside Yardley’s 22 with some great work at the break down from the forward pack. Fly half Rob Cooper slotted the kick to give Veseyans a narrow one point advantage at 15-14.
The home side threatened once again using their pace out wide to nearly add a third try but an outstanding defensive cover tackle from fullback Jon Fellows stopped them in their tracks. At this point Veseyans managed to shift the momentum back in their favour and after winning some quick ball at the break down scrum half Ali Carlos made a darting break past his opposite number, offloaded to Cooper who broke a tackle to score under the posts.
Veseyans pressed further and a well executed catch and drive shortly followed from the lineout to add a fourth try, finished by the experienced Nick Murch. Some more strong forward play culminated in a fifth try for the away team, scored by Dan Cashman, just before half time.
The second half was a much more one sided affair with Veseyans stringing together some great passages of play to exploit a tiring Yardley team. After the home side had their winger carded for an off the ball incident the flood gates opened. Great running from Fellows piled the pressure on Yardley before two solo efforts from Carlos managed to put the game to bed. Some competent kicking from Cooper ensured all the extras were added.
Andy Wilson capped an outstanding performance with a try under the posts and Cashman bagged his second of the afternoon with some great support play. Dan Casey came off the bench and showed his quality by finishing a great Veseyans move under the posts.
Veseyans will hope to continue their winning formula in the weeks ahead. Final score: 69-14.
