Baltic on the beacon…

On a very cold morning at the memorial ground the Veseyans U11’s faced a well drilled Barton Under Needwood team who were looking for an upset. Barton kicked of the first game and scored two quick tries while the V’s were still finding their feet. Two try’s down didn’t seem to dishearten the home team and a great rush defence from the kick off saw Jude clear out a ruck and new signing Ollie pass to Rayne who scored a trademark Try after sprinting around two would be Barton defenders. Veseyans collected the kick off with Owen stepping and twisting through several tackles before being brought down near the touch line, aggressive rucking from the home team saw Jude break free and level the scores at 2 all.

Barton collected their own kick off and responded with some good runs and passes, great defence from Max saw him make a certain try saving tackle after which the Barton attack fizzled out. More strong defence from Rayne and Ollie saw Barton again come up short of the try, but the resulting scrum tied in the Veseyans defenders and the wide pitch allows Barton to get a third try. Charlie kicked off and led the chase making an excellent and strong tackle near the Barton try line. More great rucking from Jake and Jess saw Matthew pick up and step two players before being well tackled in to touch. Barton caught the V’s napping from the free pass and scored a fourth try to put the pressure on. The kick off was caught by Grace who spun the first tackle before shipping the ball to Jess who made huge ground up the right hand wing. Joe Hurd cleared the ruck from the resulting tackle closely followed by great support play from Grace who perfectly fed Matthew up the left hand wing. Charlie followed the run and received the pass 10 meters from the line and only a last ditch try saving tackle from the Barton defence could deny him his try. Sean and Joe McDonald clear the resulting ruck and Joe Clorley acting as scrum half passed to Jude who smashed through the last 2 defenders to bring the score to 3 – 4 to Barton. The kick off fell to Rayne (unfortunately for Barton) and the speedster dodged, weaved and eventually bulldozed over the line to score a fantastic solo Try to bring the game up to a draw. With only a minute left to play the V’s caught the kick off through Max who set up the first ruck which was cleared out by Joe McDonald and Joe Hurd. Joe Clorley again at scrum half passed to Jess who had a trade mark thundering run through the heart of the Barton defence, a great offload to Sean saw him sprint to the Barton line spin through two tackles and crash his way over the line. An excellent performance to win 5 – 4.

The second game had much of the same excellent tackling, rucking, mauling, passing and trade mark runs that we have all come to expect from this excellent team. The V’s started in the same manner they had finished the last game with great runs from Charlie, Grace and Owen, the final phase fell to Joe Clorley who fed Joe Hurd to score the first Try of the second game. The kick off from Barton saw Ollie gather and pass back to Max, who passed back to Rayne. With almost the full pitch in front of him Rayne set off on another weaving run, the Barton coaches knew what was coming, dodging, spinning and crashing his way to the line Rayne got the second try of the game. Barton then collected their own short kick off and scored a quick try up the left hand side.

With the Barton team napping Owen kicked off deep into the left hand corner, with the Barton defence fully expecting the ball to go dead Rayne rushed passed the statues and scored his fourth of the day and the third of this game. With Barton trailing 3 -1 they switched a few players and changed tactics to use the wide pitch a little more. The changes unsettled the V’s and Barton scored three quick successive Try’s to bring the score to 3 – 4 to Barton. With only two minutes left it would seem the day was going to turn out to be a 1 – 1 draw. The home team then seem to come alive again with huge double tackles from Sean and Max, blistering runs from Grace, Jude and Matthew and barnstorming run through three tacklers from Jess which saw her score our fourth Try of the game. The kick off goes to Sean who with quick thinking kicks back down to the Barton try line, Jude follows the kick and bundles the Barton defender over his own try line to create a scrum down to Veseyans on the 5 meter line. The V’s show great hands from the Scrum with passes flowing between Sean, Ollie, Max and Grace. The final pass goes to Matthew who shows great pace and perseverance to score in the right hand corner. The game restarted and Barton showed great spirit to try and get the last try to level the scores but great defence from V’s sealed the win.

This really was an allround great performance by everyone in the team. Every player put their body on the line to make tackles, hit rucks and support their team mates.

A great day for the V’s, a great day for Rugby!
