The first game of the season arrived seeing the V’s take a short trip over to the newly promoted Handsworth. Arriving early it was clear to see that the lads were focused and ready to make a dominant start to the league campaign.

V’s started brightly with some strong defence to Handsworth’s kick return. The scoreline was opened after a mere 5 minutes after Spinner sniped from the base of a ruck capitalising on an unorganised Handsworth defence. Cheney added the extras. Handsworth swiftly hit back with a try, with a forward runner crossing the line near the posts – the fly half added the conversion. V’s then had a strong period up to the end of the first half keeping the ball well to build an attack. Handsworth’s defence was resilient much to the dismay of Booth when he was completely buried backwards by his opposite number. The defence struggle to deal with V’s attacking phases with Jon Fellows scoring in the corner, captain James Hately going in under the posts after a strong leg drive and Tom Cooper scoring out wide executing a move from the training park off an attacking line out. Score at half time was 22-7.

The second half began and it was evident that the opposition wouldn’t lie down lightly. A high kick with an awkward bounce put Handsworth in for a score early in the half. The second half continued with both sides struggling to make more of a dent in the scoreline. Midway through the half Handsworth were pressuring the V’s line which saw Slattery take 10 minutes in the bin for a professional foul. Big defence saw us clear the danger without conceding. V’s continued to add pressure causing constant infringements by Handsworth. Cooper added 2 penalties to the V’s scoreline. V’s made it a 5 point victory when both Spinner’s linked up in the middle after a quick tap penalty putting Greenwood in for a final score in the corner. Cooper added the conversion with a beautiful kick from the touchline.

The score finished at 35-12, a well deserved 5 pointer for V’s. Now to keep the momentum going in the first home game of the season next week vs Harbourne.
