Firstly, a very Happy New Year from Veseyans Rugby!
The V’s will be extremely pleased with their start to 2016, with a comfortable victory over Ashbourne in the RFU Intermediate Cup.
The East Midlands side started well, with some big carries from the forwards putting them on the front foot and into the Veseyans 22 for a spell of early pressure. However, the V’s defence well and some good work on the floor led to an early turnover for Ali Booth from which Full Back Matt Gillick was able to break down the right wing, unlucky not to collect his own kick it was knocked dead by the Ashbourne player and the Veseyans had a 5m scrum. Booth picked up and finished well diving in to the corner.
Ashbourne were able to hit back quickly, with a series of penalties using the V’s back to their own line were Ashbourne were able to push themselves over.
From that point Veseyans took control of the game and with a penalty from Dan Poulton and a try for Joe Williams following some good backline play, the score was stretched to 15-5 at half time.
The game opened up in the second half with Veseyans having the bulk of possession, further try from Matt Gillick, Jack Clayton and Dan Poulton led to a final score of 32-5 which Veseyans well deserved. They will be pleased to see their backline firing at last and scoring some tries from flowing pieces of play, much of which was orchestrated by young Fly Half Adam Spinner, who was man of the match.
Veseyans will travel to Leicester Forest East for their third round tie on February 6th.
