Veseyans put Spartans to the Sword

The Visitors flew out of the blocks in this one with a score almost straight from the Kick Off, following a smart catch on close to the the touch line, two forwards rumbles presented the backs with clean ball and they did the damage with the ball straight out wide to winger Jack Clayton who showed the opposition a clean pair of heels to go in under the posts for the score. Low and behold 30 seconds later the same thing was done, this time with centre Joe Williams going in for the score.

The Home side then began to grow into the game, especially in the scrum where the V’s had veteran Wingers Dave Pleadon and Skipper Tony Hayes deputising in the Front Row, Spartans dominance in this area grew and following a couple of defensive penalties they pushed the V’s scrum back over the line for a score.

The mighty V’s rallied from this though and with great resolution and despite being on the back foot in the set piece for the remainder of the half did not concede any further scores and following a breakaway in the centre’s again increased their lead to 21 – 5 at half time.

2nd half was very much a one way affair, despite an enforced change in the V’s Front Row, with veteran Mark Hume replacing the injured Dave Pleadon in the front row resulting in a further increase in the average age of the side. Scores from Fenton, both Williams boys, Makaose and Cheney all without response led to a final score of Spartans 5 – Veseyans 55.
