Veseyans 1st XV returned to the Memorial Ground for their first home game since the opening day of the season. With a group of former players in attendance at their annual luncheon and a run of disappointing results, the V’s were in need of a win.
The game started as an even affair with Veseyans feeling they probably had the better of the early exchanges. This was rewarded by a try for returning Full Back Matt Gillick who finished off a nice break from winger Joe Williams. Gillick converted his own try.
Veseyans were able to build immediately on the score as debutant winger Will Cheneler gassed down the right wing and beat several defenders to notch his first senior try.
Yards fought back into the game and scored a try and penalty of their own to go in at half time with the score 14-8 to Veseyans.
The second half started with Yards coming after the V’s, however, an interception try from Ben Brown extended the home sides lead.
The V’s struggled to get into the shape they had in the first half with a number of changes taking place in the pack. However, tighthead Abu Abdul scored the bonus point try through a pick and go.
The Yards side stick at it and brought themselves back into the game setting up a tense final 10 minutes. But the Veseyans defence was resolute and fully deserved the 5 point win.
