Veseyans welcomed Stafford to the Memorial Ground on a cold but clear afternoon, with a crowd bolstered by their Former Players Luncheon.
The first half proved to be a tight and well contested game, with both sides struggling to gain any real ascendency. It was Veseyans who drew first blood with a penalty from Fly Half Chris Cheney. Veseyans seemed to be boosted din confidence from the first points and began to control play with a well executed kicking game, this pressure led to another Cheney penalty giving them a 6-0 lead.
The first try of the game came through some fantastic skill from Scrum Half Will Slattery, putting in a perfectly weighted box kick from 10 metres out for Jack Clayton to run onto on the right wing. Cheney wasn’t able to add the extras. 11-0 looked to be the likely final score, however, it was that man Clayton who again raced over in the right corner. Stafford failed to make touch on the left wing and the ball was moved to Clayton in the middle of the field, he backed his pace round the outside and made it in the corner.
The 2nd half began very much in the same vain as the 1st, with both sides looking to take control in the centre of the field, without too much success. This time it was Stafford who were able to make the first move and they scored a penalty from under the posts after a prolonged attack at the Veseyans line which some resolute defence kept out. 16-3 to the V’s.
Both sides continued in their attempts to gain field position, and form one of these exchanges a Veseyans mistake led to Stafford going over, however, the conversion was missed, Stafford were still chasing multiple scores at 16 – 8. As they went after the game, Veseyans had a couple of opportunities to kick to the corner, but were unable to convert, as well as a missed penalty kick from the left side. Despite these missed opportunities Veseyans seemed in control going into the latter stages of the game, and looked likely to close it out without too many issues. It was never going to be so easy as Stafford managed to get over for another score with 2 mins left ton the clock. 16-13.
A tense final two minutes was seen out by the Veseyans, who will be pleased with another solid win at the Memorial Ground. 4 from 4 at home this season.
