Veseyans 15 v Handsworth 7

After a nervous start, Vesayans found themselves defending straight away, but with good line speed and big hits the V’s were able to clear theirs lines. Our first try came courtesy of Jordan puncturing through the Handsworth defensive line, thanks to scrum domination by our pack (which continued throughout the game), which won the ball back and field position. Unfortunately the conversion was pulled just outside the left hand post. In the last play of the first half, after another dominant scrum by the pack, a pick up and run from Courtney at No.8 created a try scoring opportunity in the right hand corner of the pitch only for Handsworth to scramble back defensively and cause us to knock on. Score at the end of the first half 5-0.

At the start of the second half, the V’s picked up where they left off and were putting the Handsworth defensive line under constant pressure. This took its toll on them and after nice ‘through the hands play’, Liam Collins had an open run into the left hand corner. Sadly the difficult conversion from 5m in from touch was missed. This made the score 10-0. Handsworth weren’t defeated though and after hard running and good rucking they were awarded a scrum. Again the V’s dealt with the scrum dominantly but a Handsworth flanker chased down the clearance kick, managed to block it and dive on the ball for a try. The conversion was sent straight down the middle of the posts. V’s were winning 10-7. This turned out to be Handsworth last flourish in the game as for the last 10 minutes all of the boys played great rugby constantly getting closer and closer to the line. The forwards just kept knocking Handsworth back, but eventually this all paid off with Courtney smashing his way over in the corner. Another difficult conversion was missed, this time just in from touch from the right, the score stayed at 15-7 and the V’s were comfortable winners.
