Following the cancellation of the latest league match the V’s made the journey up the A453 to Tamworth. In very blustery conditions the away side struck first, when young winger Elliot Newell found himself on the end of a sweeping backs move to gallop home into the corner. The home side then made the best of the conditions tell and some very strong running and two tries from their No.8 lead them to a 15 – 5 lead.
The V’s rallied and against the wind, pressed forward and won a penalty in the shadow of the posts which Stand Off Nick Williams duly slotted to leave only a 7 point gap at the half. The second half was a different matter with the away side using the conditions to have the lions share of the territory.
Another splendid backs move put Centre Jordan Reader into space who the floated a peach of a pass to put veteran wing Tony Hayes over in the corner. The game ebbed and flowed for a while after this, but with about 15minutes remaining the crucial moment of the game occurred.
The home side conceded a penalty, which was kicked to touch 5 metres out, returning hooker Steve buzz lightyear Johnson threw a laser to jumper Guy Merrington who made the call and caught to set the perfect driving maul which rumbled over the line for Skipper Tony Hayes (now playing Tight Head) to dot down for his 15 try of the season, Williams converted and soon followed this with another penalty to give the away side the victory.
Special mentions also need to be made the younger players stepping up, Ben Tatlow who bossed the scrum, Jon Fellows who had an outstanding game at full back and Ed Rowbotham who was probably thrown higher than ever before in a line out. All in all a great performance and victory.
