The home side came flying out of the blocks in this one, scoring two quick tries before the away side got started. During the second score the V’s lost their full back to a shoulder injury, which meant a massive reshuffle and veteran coach Mike Dell having to don his boots one more time.
The away side though did get a foothold in the game when Fly Half Ben Brown took a quick tap and ghosted his way through the opposition to score close to the posts which he duly converted, he followed this up with a penalty to level the scores.
Salts kept pressing and behind some strong running from their loose forwards went back in front with two more scores. The V’s pressed forward again and following a breakout from defence by Centre Adam Titchen got close to the opposition line, where the forced a penalty, skipper Tony Hayes took a quick tap and was hauled down short of the line for which the referee awarded a penalty try.
The home side took this forward and closed the half out with two further scores of their own to lead 32 – 17 at the break.
The V’s half time team talk worked a miracle and they came out and pinned the home side back with some concerted pressure, the ball got to the fringes of a ruck and you back row Rob Leslie forced his way over from close range.
The home side though came back and following a dominant line out drive, went over again in the corner to basically seal the game.
The V’s though had the final say, with another score, again Hayes took a quick tap penalty and forced his way close to the line, the ball was recycled quickly and second row Andy Ryley crashed over for his second score of the game.
