Veseyans Rangers side played their first ever fixture away at Old Salts under the lights last Friday evening. The team was made up of former club players, some of which had not played for some time, others who were parents / coaches of the mini and junior sections and players who had never picked up a ball before.

The V’s started the brightest, but unfortunately inspirational skipper Stan Checkett had to leave the field after picking up a knock.

The away side scored first, following a break from Centre Chris Bedford, big second row Rob Steadman broke through the Salts defence to touch down in the corner.

The Salts team (made up of several club captains – including the current first team skipper) came back into the game with their pack rumbling over the line from short distance.

The match was played in windy and wet conditions, so as the game went on it seemed that the next score would be crucial, it came following a quickly taken tap penalty by Tony Hayes, who was hauled down just short of the line, the forwards recycled and forward Sean Byrne was able to crash over line from short range.

The game was played in great spirit, in front of an appreciative crowd at Old Salts who thoroughly enjoyed the competitive nature of the match.
