Another tough day at the office for Veseyans 2’s  started brightly with a break away try by Jervis within the first five minutes. John Fellows converted in what was to be the only score for Veseyans in the first half. Old Hales used their weight superiority in the scrum to execute a simple game plan of pick and go which was defended bravely but eventually saw the home team run in five tries in the first half. The second half was a more even contest with both sides exchanging two tries a piece. John Fellows, who had been a handful all afternoon with a number of jinking runs, made a line break inside the Old Hales half and then beat two defenders for pace before scoring wide. Dan Hemming then showed great determination from a tap penalty from twenty meters out to bully his way through the score under the post which John Fellows duly converted.

Despite the loss there were a number of positives. Nathan Merritt returned from 4 years overseas to show that quality never diminishes. He was effective at the set piece and in the loose. Joe Smith, one of our ever growing number of colts moving into senior rugby, showed great commitment in defence and looked capable of making yards with the ball in hand. And the team as a whole showed, in patches, a great determination to defend our line. We have had some tough matches this year but the commitment of the team to keep on until the last minute cannot be denied.
