In the first of two pre-season games the Veseyans performed well against an experienced Old Halesonians team over at Wassall Grove. The game itself took the form of four 20minutes periods and during the first the Veseyans took time to settle as the opposition took more of the possession and territory.

As the game developed it was clear to see that the Veseyans backs had the advantage over their opponents with their pace and the forwards were very much an even match. The back row of Lock, Harris and Russell performed with great credit, the front five all worked hard and soon started to dictate more control at the scrum moving through to the 2nd period.

The scorers were….

Matt (Cherry) Bakewell – 1try

Alex Morgan – 1try

Matt Gillick – 1try

Ryan Brunsden – 2tries

Ben Harris – 1try

Jack Ward – 1try

Adam Clark – 2con

Adam Ward – 1con

Veseyans overall fitness proved to be one of the big differences and showed that all the hard work done during June, July and August has and will by a big investment as they move to the business part of the new season.

From the club perspective to take 28 players over the Wassall Grove and with still 30 more players missing through unavailability or injury the future looks extremely positive particularly when you see one of the junior players having a run out and performing as a seasoned campaigner.

From the Coaches perspective whatever 15 players took the field on Saturday at no stage did the direction, commitment, game understanding falter which is a credit to all the players for showing a great commitment back to the club and each other.

It shows that the investment by the club could be starting to bear some fruit.

Our 2nd pre-season game is on Thursday 21st July against Sutton Coldfield RFC kick off at 7.00pm so please let’s see you all down there supporting the lads!
