On a cold afternoon it was the visitors that struck first in this encounter, some good pressure down the middle of the pitch resulting in a Penalty in Front of the posts which Centre Nick Williams duly slotted. The home side followed this up with an attacking period of their own, which again resulted in a penalty that was scored. The away side then down the pitch, skipper Tony Hayes kicked a penalty into the corner and then the pack took over with a perfectly executed catch and drive which was illegally brought down in front of the line resulting in a penalty try. The home side again responded with a break in the middle of the pitch resulting in the inside centre crashing over to level the scores.
The V’s gathered themselves behind the posts and determined to make that the last home points of the game came out firing, Jake Haden-White made an outstanding break inside the opposition 22 and could only be brought down with a trip, which also resulted in a Penalty Try duly converted again by Williams, which meant the away side went in at the half 7 points up.
The V’s came out in the second half determined to keep the pressure on, and this told with Owain Luckwell making a break from a scrum to go over in the corner, to put the visitors over a score clear.
The home side again came back, but some resolute defending kept them at bay and then came the final score of the game.
Again Skipper Hayes backed his back to the hilt and instead of going for goal kicked to the corner and spotted it 5 metres out Hooker Steve Johnson then hit his man perfectly, Oz Horrocks set the driving maul and Johnson got in the back of the van to push it over the line for the final score of the game. Edwardians though to their great credit came back with some fine driving play of their own in the last few minutes which the V’s rebuffed with great composure to round out the game.
