On a Baltic Sunday morning, Veseyans U11’s travelled to Coalville RFC where an experienced a sizeable opposition awaited them.
After a good warm up the team took to the pitch full of endeavour to impose themselves on the game with the running rugby that had been on display two weeks ago at Old Yardlians.
The tone of the game was set from the off with a great rush defence and a thunderous tackle from Max, on their biggest player which set up a ruck and a fantastic steal by Tom. The experienced Coalville side seemed a little shaken at the force in which the Veseyans defence had started.
Despite the heart shown in the tackle and at the breakdown, Coalville found their stride and shipped the ball wide resulting in the first score of the day. Brave Charlie never gave up, leading the defence and putting in a huge hit (and try saving tackle) on a big Coalville player who was looking to add a quick second score.
Veseyans who had seen little ball in the opening exchanges suddenly found themselves in space through a trademark jinking run from Sean who led the team up the field. Sadly the fierce battle at the breakdown saw Coalville disrupt much of the positive Veseyans play foiling a number of try scoring opportunities.
Coalville finished the half with a further two scores through their big powerful runners, leaving Veseyans to come in at half time and regroup.
The half time talk paid dividends as the team started the game with an impressive break by Sean offloading to Joe who went on a strong run through the Coalville players. It was in vain though as Coalville weathered the storm and turned the ball over at the ruck, turning defence into attack. Again Max put in some massive tackles and despite the team conceding two quick tries, the fighting spirit remained high.
From the restart, the team fed the ball through the hands and Grace showed great vision, and pace to go over in the corner for the away teams first score of the day! A fantastic lift for the team who had worked incredibly hard and fully deserved the score.
As the game moved into the third quarter, the introduction of Jude and Tom injected aggression and physicality to the breakdown and the team began to rise to the occasion pegging Coalville back on their own line.
Great breakdown work by Tom led to Owen crashing over the line; sadly the ball was lost in contact. Coalville tried to make their way out of their half only to be met with a monstrous hit by Charlie.
The game flowed back and forth until Coalville found their stride and the same big runners converted pressure into points.
As the team entered the final quarter of the match, true Veseyans heart was on display as again we carried the ball hard sending Jake over the line to again lift the spirits of the team.
Speaking with Coalville coaches after the match they commented on how well the Veseyans team had performed given we have only been together for one season in contrast to an opposition that have been together for 5 years.
As coaches we were incredibly proud of the never give up attitude, the togetherness that was displayed by this young and extremely talented Veseyans U11 team.
It is in defeat that we learn our biggest lessons and to come away from Coalville with so many positives in our performance only suggests that the future is bright for the team in black and white!
